The Power of a Giving Plan: Insights from the National Christian Foundation

Giving is an integral part of living a life of purpose and impact. The National Christian Foundation (NCF) promotes the idea of a structured giving plan to ensure that your generosity is both intentional and effective. Here’s why creating a giving plan can transform your philanthropic efforts and leave a lasting legacy.

Why Create a Giving Plan?

A giving plan is a strategic approach to philanthropy that helps you maximize the impact of your contributions. Here are some key reasons to develop a giving plan:

Intentionality: A giving plan allows you to be purposeful with your donations. By setting clear goals and priorities, you ensure that your contributions align with your values and passions.

Impact: With a structured plan, you can identify the most effective ways to support the causes you care about. This can include supporting specific projects, investing in long-term solutions, or funding innovative initiatives.

Stewardship: A giving plan helps you manage your resources wisely. By planning your giving, you can take advantage of tax benefits, ensure that your donations are used efficiently, and avoid impulsive decisions that may not have the desired impact.

Legacy: Creating a giving plan allows you to leave a lasting legacy. You can set up endowments, create donor-advised funds, or establish charitable trusts that will continue to support your chosen causes even after you are gone.

Steps to Creating a Giving Plan

Identify Your Values and Goals: Start by reflecting on your values and the causes you are passionate about. What impact do you want to make in the world? What issues resonate with you the most?

Assess Your Resources: Consider all the assets you can contribute, not just cash. This can include stocks, real estate, business interests, or other non-cash assets. The NCF specializes in facilitating non-cash giving, which can provide significant tax benefits.

Choose Your Giving Methods: Decide how you want to structure your giving. This can include making direct donations, setting up a donor-advised fund, creating a charitable trust, or establishing an endowment.

Develop a Plan: Outline your giving strategy in a detailed plan. This should include your goals, the causes you want to support, the methods you will use, and a timeline for your contributions.

Review and Adjust: Regularly review your giving plan to ensure it remains aligned with your values and goals. Be prepared to adjust your plan as your circumstances and priorities change.

NCF's Role in Your Giving Plan

The National Christian Foundation provides a range of services to help you develop and implement your giving plan. Their team of experts can guide you through the process, from identifying your goals to managing your contributions. They offer various tools and resources, including donor-advised funds, charitable trusts, and endowments, to help you make the most of your generosity.

By creating a giving plan, you can ensure that your philanthropy is intentional, impactful, and aligned with your values. Eagle of the Week

Note: We are actively working to meet with Matt and invite him to speak at our Eagle Summit in September!

Matt Farmer
President, National Christian Foundation - Heartland
Matt longs to see all of Kansas City and the Heartland flourish.

“I believe the National Christian Foundation, by God’s grace and help, can catalyze and convene generous givers to mobilize God’s resources for His work and make that flourishing a reality,” he said.

Matt joined NCF in 2019 as vice president of NCF Heartland in Overland Park, Kansas. He leads a regional effort with a strategic emphasis on the Kansas City metro area. “I build relationships with new and existing givers, connecting them with the larger giving community and increasing awareness on NCF’s wise and innovative giving strategies,” he said.

Prior to NCF, Matt was director of operations for five years at The Hope Center, a comprehensive community development organization in east Kansas City, Missouri. While there, he spearheaded real estate and economic development initiatives and oversaw day-to-day activities.

Matt is a lifelong learner. He’s an MBA graduate of Washington University in St. Louis. He also holds a master of divinity degree from Denver Seminary and a bachelor of science degree in social sciences from the U.S. Air Force Academy, followed by 12 years of service in the U.S. Air Force.

Combining his passion for the Lord and his love of sports, Matt is a chaplain with Baseball Chapel, an international ministry recognized by Major and Minor League Baseball. He serves as the chaplain leader for the Kansas City Royals. His sports career also includes a two-year stint as a receiver and punt returner for the New York Jets.

He and his wife, Jenna, live in Kansas City, Missouri, with their three boys. The Farmers operate a small business focused on providing quality, customer-focused housing in Kansas City’s east side.
